From the cold realm of Finland comes a new voice prepared to join the depressive black metal scene. Even though it was formed in 2020, the band Musta Suru released their first album this year on May 29 via Downfall Records. Named “Viilmeinen Viilto”, the album delivers haunting soundscapes steeped in melancholy, introspection and raw emotion.
I have always been drawn to music that does not try to hide uncomfortable emotions, and “Viimeinen Viilto” immediately caught my attention for this exact reason. Its melancholic sound feels deeply personal, as if every song gives shape to thoughts that are usually difficult to express. The pain and sorrow cut deep, but once the album reaches its end, what remains is a strange sense of liberation.

Expressing the struggles of human existence
The album begins with “Hetki (Intro)”, an instrumental piece that offers a glimpse into the style that defines the rest of the album. Its sound reminds me somewhat of Lifelover, combining a powerful emotional impact with a melancholic atmosphere that, despite everything, still carries a faint glimmer of hope.
“Veren Varjot” maintains the same melancholic sound while introducing high-pitched black metal vocals. Their harshness contrasts beautifully with the calmer instrumental, creating a strange balance between comfort and despair. This tension seems to define the album as a whole. Hopeful melodies are mixed with depressive lyrics, making the sadness feel somehow easier to accept.
The title track, “Viimeinen Viilto”, feels like giving in to despair. Its sorrowful sound carries a heavy sense of resignation. There is no longer any strength left to fight against the darkness. The mournful melodies slowly pull you deeper into this feeling, making the song feel like a quiet acceptance of pain.
“Savu” completes this atmosphere. It initially sounds like a desperate cry for help, but gradually loses its sense of urgency, ending in the complete surrender of hope. “Hauras” keeps a similar sound, but feels more fragile and intimate. You are witnessing the final remnants of someone slowly falling apart. You can’t do anything to prevent that, you are helpless forced to watch as their collapse slowly begins to pull you down with them.
“Kosketus” comes as a short moment of peace and reflection. It is the calm that comes when you decide that your fate should come to an end. “Matkalla Kohti Kuolemaa” continues along this path. Its monotonous rhythm and cries of pain create the feeling of a slow, inevitable descent to death. The burden of life weighs too heavily, crushing any glimpse of hope for better days.
“Unissani Kuollut” gives a darker nuance to the album. The voices in your head keep echoing, returning over and over again. It is the fine line between despair and insanity. You begin to question whether it is all a dream or reality, but you are unable to tell the difference. “Menehtynyt” comes as a conclusion. A fragment of hope still remains despite all the dark thoughts. You are now confused and lost, caught somewhere between the desire to keep going and the feeling that there is no way forward.
