Although much of their music from the mid-1990s onwards has incorporated electronic sounds which would best define their genre as industrial metal, Samael was originally founded as an early 2nd Wave black metal band.

The band was started in the late 80s by brothers Xytras (drums/programming/keyboards) and Vorphalack (vocal/guitar), along with Masmiseim (bass) and it was initially influenced by first generation Black Metal bands such as Venom, Bathory and Swiss compatriots Hellhammer/Celtic Frost.

Their initial demos showcased a slow, doomy strain of thrash metal characterized by raw vocals. Several of these compositions would later find their way onto the albums “Worship Him” (1991) and “Blood Ritual” (1992).

Around the era of “Ceremony of Opposites” (1994), the band began incorporating industrial-inspired songwriting techniques, incorporating keyboards and minimalist acoustic percussion.

Their album Passage (1996) marked a significant milestone, attracting a broader audience, notably through the airing of the music video for “Jupiterian Vibe” on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball.

Following the release of “Eternal,” which was recorded and mixed at Mountain Studio by David Richard in 1999, Samael opted not to extend their contract with Century Media.

In 2004, “Reign of Light” made its debut under the band’s independent label, Galactical Records. The album spawned two singles: “Telepath,” accompanied by a music video, and “On Earth,” which featured a cover of Depeche Mode’s “I Feel You.”

In 2006, the electronica venture Era One, featuring Vorph and Xy, was launched on Century Media Records. It included a bonus disc, “Lesson in Magic No. 1,” entirely instrumental and crafted by keyboardist Xy. Originally recorded in 2001, with the bonus disc following a year later, both were reworked and remixed in 2005.

June 2007 marked the release of “Solar Soul,” featuring tracks like “Solar Soul,” “Slavocracy,” and “AVE!” It amalgamated various styles from their previous albums, beginning with “Passage.”

On March 6, 2009, Samael unveiled “Above,” a full-length album paying homage to the band’s origins.

In June 2010, Samael commenced the demo recording process for their upcoming album. The first single from the album, “Antigod,” hit the shelves on November 19, 2010. Entitled “Lux Mundi,” which translates to “Light of the World,” the album was released on April 29, 2011, in Europe and May 3, 2011, in North America. During the same month, they filmed a music video for the track “Luxferre” in Sweden under the direction of Patric Ulaeus.

Their latest full-lenght “Hegemony” was released on 13 October 2017. Before hand, the band released lyrics video for the songs “Angel of Wrath” and “Red Planet”, and a video for “Black Supremacy”.

Samael is:

Vorph – Guitar & Vocals
Xy – Keyboards and Programming
Drop – Guitar
Ales – Bass
