Austere took the extreme metal scene by storm when they announced their comeback in 2022 after a prolonged, 13 year hiatus. With their first reunion show right in our own backyard, at Dark Bombastic Evening (DBE) festival in Alba Iulia, Romania, on July 28th 2022, they came back to the stage with renewed creative spirits. The following year, in 2023, they released the full-length Corrosion of Hearts, which sank into the hearts of many, including this writer.
Now, Austere are paving the way for their latest release titled Beneath the Threshold. Earlier this year, they have released two other singles, Faded Ghost and The Sunset of Life, which we have also covered in a previous article.
Cold Cerecloth is the third and final single taken from Beneath the Threshold, which is set for release on April 5, 2024 via the Lupus Lounge division of Prophecy Productions. Blending their characteristic black metal ethos with solid, memorable and melodic guitar themes and melancholic shoegaze elements, this new single solidifies the expectations already set by the previous two brilliant singles of an upcoming darkgaze masterpiece.
On this track, guitarist and singer Mitchell Keepin stated on behalf of the duo that: “We have already started playing Cold Cerecloth live. […] We aimed for a song that gets musically straight to the point and retains that feeling from beginning to end. Although ‘Cold Cerecloth’ appears to be simple and is pushed forward by a fairly static structure, the song actually captures a fairly broad spectrum. The lyrics are used in an introspective and rather cryptic way. In a way, this track provides a backdrop for the words hence the straight nature of its movement.”
