Mykola Sostin, known in the music world as “Amorth“, died while protecting Ukraine. A revered drummer and keyboardist, Amorth was a vital part of Ukraine’s metal scene, performing with influential bands such as Drudkh, Nokturnal Mortum, Astrofaes, Thunderkraft, and Soom.
A Drummer Across Decades and Projects
Mykola “Amorth” Sostin’s career spanned decades, during which he was a member of some of Ukraine’s most respected metal bands. In the early 2000s, he played with Thunderkraft, contributing drums and vocals on “The Victory Banner” (“Знамя победы“) and leaving an indelible mark with his intensity. His work with Drudkh on “Autumn Aurora” (2004), “The Swan Road“, known as “Лебединий шлях” (2005), and “Blood in Our Wells” known as “Кров у наших криницях” (2006) showcased his prowess on both drums and keyboards, capturing a haunting atmosphere that resonated deeply within Ukraine’s black metal scene.
Reflecting on his contributions, Drudkh shared, on the band official Facebook page, “Amorth has fallen in battle. I never told you—it was good that we decided to record those albums without a metronome”.
A Legacy of Dedication and Talent
In addition to Drudkh, Mykola performed with Astrofaes, where he brought his talents to albums like “…Those Whose Past Is Immortal” (2005), “Idea. Form. Essence…” (2007) and the EP “Shu-Nun” (2008).
His work in Underdark spanned many years, contributing to demos and albums like “The Truth That Lives” known as “Правда та, что живёт” and “Eternal Raw” (2005). He brought relentless energy to “I Am Above All” (2006), where he handled everything from drums and keyboards to vocals, infusing the music with a raw and introspective intensity.
His work with the local bands Заводь, Ungern, Святогор, and Чиста Криниця further solidified his reputation as a dedicated musician whose contributions were integral to every band he joined.
Honoring the Fallen
The death of Amorth was announced on 4.11.2024. According to various sources, including Encyclopedia Metallum, Mykola “Amorth” Sostin was 39 years old.
Reflecting on Mykola’s passing, Nokturnal Mortum honored him as “Amorth, the musician from the ranks of Kharkiv metal scene, has met his immortality in battle in the war for the survival of Ukraine. Eternal memory, eternal glory”.
His music, filled with the vitality and resolve of his spirit, lives on as a tribute to his strength and dedication.
