When a band like Distrüster enters your playlist, you immediately know you’re in for something special. From the very first listen, their raw intensity commands your attention. After being amazed by their 2022 release, “Sic Semper Tyrannis“, I knew I had to follow their journey. And with the release of their new EP, “Obscurum Per Obscurius“, I’m glad I made that decision.
“No Rules” – Short but Powerful
The EP kicks off with “No Rules”, a track that may only last a brief 1:51, but it packs a serious punch. There’s a saying that strong essences come in small bottles, and that couldn’t be more true for this opener. It’s a fierce and relentless track, setting the tone perfectly for what’s to follow.
“God Reject” – Unfiltered Aggression
Next up, “God Reject” continues the intensity, embracing themes often seen in metal, but executed with such precision and depth that it feels refreshing. The instrumental work here is flawless, showcasing the band’s mastery in delivering hard-hitting riffs and rhythms. “God Reject” is pure, unfiltered aggression at its finest.
“Pat on the Back” – Unstoppable Energy
“Pat on the Back” follows a similar musical trajectory, carrying forward the relentless energy of “God Reject”. The guitar work and pacing remain impeccable, and while it’s sonically aligned with the previous track, it still manages to stand out with its nuanced execution and sheer intensity.
“Polytoxicomania” and “Bullshit” – Raw and Relentless
The EP’s closing tracks, “Polytoxicomania” and “Bullshit (Short Edit)”, maintain the raw intensity established earlier, but with an edge of unpredictability. “Polytoxicomania” is frantic and chaotic, delivering a whirlwind of sound that mirrors its title. It doesn’t follow a clean, structured path, which gives it a distinct character. “Bullshit”, despite its short length, leaves a lasting impression with its sharp, cutting riffs and a no-nonsense attitude that brings the EP to a forceful close. Both tracks encapsulate Distrüster’s ability to combine aggression with a sense of controlled chaos.
Bonus Remixes – Pushing Boundaries
As a bonus, “Obscurum Per Obscurius” features remixes that offer a unique twist. “God Reject (Deformer Remix)” and “To Live Beautifully (Ferment Remix)” bring in influences from electronic and experimental genres, adding layers of texture and atmosphere to the already aggressive tracks. These remixes by Deformer and Ferment are notable collaborations that push the boundaries of Distrüster’s sound, blending their crust/death metal roots with breakcore and black metal elements.
Is There More to Uncover?
Based in Kraków, Poland, crust/death metal band Distrüster returned with “Obscurum Per Obscurius” on October 18th released under Ossuary Records. This follows their 2022 debut, “Sic Semper Tyrannis”, and continues their relentless sonic assault. Recorded and mixed at No Solace by M. (from Mgła, Kriegsmaschine, and Owls Woods Graves), the EP features the core lineup of Uappa Terror (guitar, bass, vocals), Kosa (vocals), and James Stewart (drums). With guest contributions from Deformer and Ferment, the EP is a bold step forward for the band. Lasting just over 20 minutes, “Obscurum Per Obscurius” is available on CD and online, with physical copies also sold at their November tour in Poland.
