Romanian atmospheric folk/black metal band Sur Austru makes a striking return with their third studio album, “Datura Străhiarelor”, arriving three years after the critically acclaimed “Obârșie”. Carrying forward the legacy of the renowned Negură Bunget, Sur Austru delves even deeper into Romanian lore, offering a fresh and immersive experience. The new album stands as the band’s most intricate and ambitious work yet, pushing the boundaries of the group’s progressive and folkloristic influences.

Translated as “The Gift of Scarecrows”, the album “Datura Străhiarelor” is a concept piece that explores an original tale inspired by magical beings from Romanian lore. As I listen, I find myself utterly fascinated by this narrative. These mythical entities breach the barrier between their fantastical realm and the human world, unleashing ancient beasts that bring about humanity’s end. It is a mesmerizing journey into a mythic apocalypse, vividly brought to life through the band’s evocative music.

A Journey Through Sound: From Intensity to Tranquility

The opening track, “Arătarea”, is nothing short of mind-blowing. It begins with a slow, tension-building intro that feels like the calm before the storm, then bursts into a powerful and captivating piece. The energy carries through subsequent tracks, reaching a peak with “Cele Rele”, which features a dynamic and forceful introduction, unique instrumentation, and strong, commanding vocals. This track sets a high bar for the rest of the album. “Fărmăcarea” enters with an intriguing and atmospheric intro that immediately captures attention. The song evolves into a melodically complex piece, weaving together intricate layers of sound that reflect the band members’ mastery of their craft. The lyrics delve deep into themes of ancient magic and dark prophecies, evoking a chilling sense of ancient rites and malevolent forces. The closing track of the album, “Isprăvirea”, serves as a soothing conclusion to the tumultuous journey. This song verily offers a moment of reflection and tranquility. The ethereal instrumentation and serene vocals create a meditative atmosphere, making it a perfect ending to the album’s narrative.

Is There More to Uncover?

The album’s richness is further enhanced by collaborations with painter Bogdan Țigan, who created all the illustrations, and poet Călin Miclăuș, who penned the lyrics. Their contributions add depth and texture, with Bogdan’s unique artwork capturing the essence of the music and Călin’s words offering a profound exploration of Romanian mystical traditions.
