Udåd’s debut album is more than a musical endeavor; it’s a deep dive into the annals of black metal’s past and a bold exploration of its future.

When I first delved into Udåd’s debut album, it was akin to stumbling upon a buried relic in the darkened catacombs of Norwegian black metal. This eponymous offering from Thomas Eriksen evokes a raw, unfiltered essence that immediately captivates with its nostalgic reverence and bold experimentation.

From the haunting introductory instrumental, “Den Evindelige Ende”, Udåd sets a chilling precedent. The guitar riff, repetitive yet commanding, transports me back to the primal origins of black metal, echoing with a sense of ancient melancholy and grim triumph. It’s a track that speaks volumes without uttering a single word—a testament to Eriksen’s ability to wield atmosphere like a sculptor shapes stone.

As the album unfolds, tracks like “Bakenfor Urskogens Utkant” and “Avgudsdyrker” showcase Udåd’s mastery of the genre’s traditional elements while injecting a fresh, almost rebellious energy. The riffs are hypnotic, weaving a tapestry of sorrow and defiance, reminiscent of the genre’s heyday while firmly rooted in the present. The guitar work remains a highlight, each chord a proclamation of darkness that resonates with both reverence and innovation.

Moving deeper into the album, “Den Virkelige Apokryt” emerges as a whirlwind of frenetic tempo and haunting progressions, evoking shades of mid-‘90s black metal legends. Eriksen’s vocal delivery, distinct and evocative, adds a layer of raw authenticity, defying convention with a punk-infused fervor that sets Udåd apart from its peers.

Closing with “Kald Iver” and “Antropofagens Hunger”, Udåd leaves an indelible mark. The former channels early Mork vibes with its clean, gliding riffs, while the latter unfolds like a sinister narrative—a soundtrack to clandestine deeds and forbidden rites. The compositional prowess shines here, painting vivid scenes with soundscapes that linger long after the final notes fade.
