Less than two months until Europe Under Black-Death Metal Fire Tour arrives at Quantic Club in Bucharest. On March 2, Suffocation, Belphegor and Hate will perform for the Romanian metalheads.
Suffocation is one of the earliest groups to redefine the death metal style that is recognized today. The band uses “outrageously guttural vocals with a bottom-heavy guitar foundation, blistering speed, unparalleled brutality and sophisticated sense of songwriting, complex time changes and lead and rhythm guitar acrobatics” and frequent slam riffs and breakdowns. With their debut album, Effigy of the Forgotten, Suffocation rose to prominence of death metal and created a blueprint for the genre for the 1990s, retaining their style after the reunion in 2003. Decibel Magazine stated: “Effigy of the Forgotten was a benchmark for extreme music, as it sacrificed neither virtuosity or brutality, becoming a signpost for thousands who were still contemplating how to incorporate scalar runs, rapid-fire palm-muting and hummingbird-wing-quick picking into riffs, while opening up rhythmic dimensions and the scope of the blast beat.”
Belphegor was founded as Betrayer in 1991 by vocalist and bassist Maxx, guitarists Helmuth and Sigurd, and drummer Chris. The band released their first demo Kruzifixion in April 1991, and Unborn Blood later on. After adopting the name Belphegor in 1993, they released another demo, Bloodbath in Paradise on Maxi-CD format. At some point before or after the release of this demo, Maxx departed from the band, resulting in Helmuth assuming his role as both vocalist and guitarist of Belphegor since. In between 1993 and 1996 session member A-X performed bass, after which bassist Mario “Marius” Klausner joined the band as a full-time member.
Belphegor released their tenth album, “Conjuring The Dead”, on August 8, 2014, via Nuclear Blast. It entered the official German charts at #60, as well as reaching #33 in the Austrian album charts, #177 in France, #13 Heatseekers #52 “Hard Music” charts in the USA and #58 in Canada. It was their best chart result ever in these countries.
Before Belphegor’s show in St. Petersburg, the band’s leader Helmuth Lehner was attacked by Anatoly Artyukh, an orthodox activist and the assistant of the deputy Vitaly Milonov. The incident happened at Pulkovo Airport on April 19, 2016.
Hate is a blackened death metal band from Poland. The band was formed in 1990 by guitarist and vocalist Adam “ATF Sinner” Buszko, guitars Quack and drummer Mittloff. The band lineup has changed many times over the years and currently consists solely of Adam Buszko and drummer Paweł Jaroszewicz. They have released ten full-length studio albums to date, as well as a number of early demos and EPs. Their most recent album, Auric Gates of Veles, was released on June 14th, 2019 through Metal Blade Records.
