The meeting of DBE is formed mainly through the wholehearted engagement of a fragile community, by people coming from all over Europe and not only. It could be said that they are the “die-hard fans”. Some come from the very beginning, others have joined in later, perhaps even for the first time, but we deeply feel their warmth and longing for a new event. Here, the alignment of the stars is called “by default”.
Another category is more occasional, whose interest is driven mainly by the line-up. These people visit DBE mostly when something neat appears for them. Some stay only to watch their favourite bands, others let themselves be seduced by new discoveries as well.
We also know that there are some who visited us frequently but then lost interest in DBE. We thank them for their support and we are convinced that the mirage of underground music will continue to guide them to other beautiful events.
And then there are those undecided, whose engagement can be fueled by any of the above-mentioned causes. Their stars dwell in all sorts of lands, depending maybe on the Moon’s phase.
As numerology is an important element of DBE, along with the signs received from everywhere else, we tend to believe that the new concept of the Opening Ceremony will align itself harmoniously with the 10th Ritual. We’ll be back on this one with the applied references.
The line-up will consist in a limited number of bands, darker, more underground, with only a few connections to the past, where not only the music itself is fascinating, keeping the rest of our attention on discovering and on premieres in Romania, and on what DBE does best: to surprise, to inspire, to lure and to conquer.
You know the concept already: without big bands and for the opening, no expectations, only good mood!
Thus, together we will step into a new DBE journey with a cosmic imprint because what happened on the sky and on stage at the last ritual continues to excite and to challenge us.
Another three bands were confirmed for this edition: There’s A Light, GOLD and Throane.
There’s A Light are from Lahr / Freiburg, Germany and they are the authors of post-rock / experimental arrangements, as they themselves declare. The band has released two materials so far, an album (A Long Lost Silence-2018) and an EP (Kartoum -2012). It can be found on Bandcamp. Also, There’s A Light means: David Christmann – guitar, Markus Dold – guitar, Jonas Obermuller – Keyboards, Andreas Richau – Vocals / Bass and Jan Luftner – drums.
GOLD released its debut record Interbellum in 2012 on Germany’s cult label Ván Records. No Image followed in 2015 released by Ván in Europe and Profound Lore in the USA, and in 2017 GOLD released its most well-received record to date, the brooding and hypnotic Optimist. The latter was unanimously praised as a tour de force in songwriting, atmosphere, and existential innuendo. On each record, the songcraft has deepened and widened as Milena Eva’s poetic lyrics and delivery have connected strongly to the depths of the soul. The band as a unit – rounded out by Thomas Sciarone, Kamiel Top and Jaka Bolič on guitars, Tim Meijer on bass, and Igor Wouters on drums – are primal and whirling; full of life, and yet a memento mori.
GOLD wonderfully blends the confidence of post-metal with the fragility of goth rock – with electrifying results. Recalling the experimentalism of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the dark and sweet beauty of Kristin Hersh and Throwing Muses, but firmly rooted in a powerful, yet artsy rock vibe, GOLD have tapped into something truly unique. The band’s delicate balance has caught the attention of the likes of Converge, with whom they toured in 2016 and 2017, as well as New Model Army, who invited GOLD as support for dates in 2018. In 2019, GOLD will tour Europe, including performances at Roadburn and Hellfest.
Throane is a post-black metal project from France, the vision of the enigmatic photographer/illustrator/designer Dehn Sora. Throane released two records Plus une Main a Mordre-2017 and Derrière-Nous, La Lumière-2016. Like Sora’s visual art, his music possesses a hypnotic, almost hyperreal singularity: ultra-modern meditations crisply rendering the esoteric as familiar and the everyday as phantasmagoria. This is a record of cities as tombs, of failing industry, corroding capitalism, fractured lives, divided peoples, isolationism and lack.
