David Vincent of Morbid Angel, Rune Eriksen of Mayhem and Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy formed a supergroup named Vltimas.I am a big fan of Cryptopsy and Morbid Angel and of course Mayhem I was very surprised to find out they started a band but also I was kinda skeptical about it .It took me some seconds to be convinced that this album is a total masterpiece.Vltimas has influences from all the aforementioned bands which is inasne becasue all of the three bands are giants in their own metal gener. Each member leaves his own footprint on the songs in a balanced manner that gives homogeneity to each song.
“Something Wicked Marches In”- the title of the album- has an atmosphere that dominates throughout the album is haunting evil, witched and full of power, the perfect fusion between death metal and black metal.
The first song on the album “Something wicked marches in” is played as fast and hard as they can with the unmistakable accompaniment of the legendary David Vincent who unleashes some of the best growls I could say as good as he done Altars of Madness and Blessed Are the Sick.
Another great track is “Monolilith” one of the slower song that is sad and kind of nostalgic. But, I mean, we’ve got Rune Eriksen on guitar, so it makes sense. There is also quite a lot of groove here and that’s the Cryptopsy seeping in.Overall its very hard and tight
The artwork is made by Zbigniew Bielak notorious for his collaboration with bands like Destroyer 666, Absu, Azarath, Grave Desecration, Craft and the list goes on. Although artwork may seem at first a mixture of vague things, it is worth analyzing carefully because it is not just an ambiguous artwork on the contrary, it is rich in symbols and can be interpreted differently.
“Something Wicked Marches In” isn’t your traditional blackened death metal album, there is no “dominant sub-genre”. Those seconds of skepticism were easily the worst seconds of my life so do yourself a favor and bow to it faithfully, and splendidly.
