Crippled Black Phoenix have confounded critics trying to pin their style down ever since multi-instrumentalist Justin Greaves recorded his first ideas in 2004 – which earned them tagging attempts ranging from “stoner prog” to “freak folk” to “psychedelic doom”.
Despite the wide range of musical leanings within their albums, there is a unifying dark path and somber melancholy running through the songs.
Founder Justin Greaves had already made a name for himself as drummer for Iron Monkey and Electric Wizard among others. He still played doom, but also approached black metal, drone rock, and post new wave in various bands. He even scored a couple of independent films. When the multi-instrumentalist finally decided to stand on his own musical feet, Crippled Black Phoenix was born as a project. This involves a changing cast of musicians and live set-ups, which mirror the ever ongoing evolution of the band. Signing with Season of Mist in 2016 brought the E.P. “New Dark Age”, the album “Bronze”, which has been very well received by critics and fans alike, and soon to be released album, “Great Escape”. Crippled Black Phoenix have made live shows a focus and have performed in unusual venues, using Victorian-era instruments in tandem with more modern instruments.
Greaves speaks about Crippled Black Phoenix influences in an interview: “I like Pink Floyd, but I never set out to write something that sounds like them. I try not to be influenced by anything in particular. When I write an album, I don’t listen to anything else. I just do the demos and listen to those and try to get what’s in my head out of my head.”
The opening act will be held by The Devil’s Trade, a one man show whose music is the dust he shakes during this pilgrimage in life.
